Winger N'Zogbia is eligible to play for England

Wigan Athletic footballer Charles N'Zogbia has been arrested over allegations that someone else completed the written part of his driving test.

He was held on suspicion of causing fraud by false representation as he turned up at Sale Driving Test Centre in Greater Manchester on Wednesday.

The French winger, 23, was at the centre to sit the practical part of his test when he was arrested, police said.

He has been released on police bail until 3 June.

The Driving Standards Agency would not comment.

Mr N'Zogbia, who joined Wigan last year from Newcastle United, scored the winning goal when his team beat Arsenal 3-2 on Sunday.

Although he is French, Mr N'Zogbia is eligible to represent England on the basis of residency and there have been calls for him to be selected by manager Fabio Capello.

Forget the driving test fraud - N'Zogbia is eligible for England now?!

Stupid thing to do... if it's true of course.

Yes, he's been eligible for a little while I think.

I was hoping that my recent return to some sort of fitness and my 5 a-side record (top scorer in the league at the moment) would get my a knod over Emile Heskey. I could definitely play up front with Rooney although for all my criticism of him I did get compared to Berbatov by my last manager.

Well that's better than when I was compared to Jan Molby.

Was that due to you not leaving the centre circle but still running a game or because you went to Liverpool for the day and developed a scouse accent?

Not leaving the centre circle due to my LRPB (Long Relationship Pot Belly).

Mohamed Diame does not appear to be a fan of life in Wigan.

The French midfielder moved to the Latics in 2009 from Spanish side Rayo Vallecano, and in an interview with a magazine in his homeland he had a few choice things to say about his new home.

"The truth about life in Wigan is there is nothing to do," said Diame.

"It is a crappy place. The town is tiny and there is no atmosphere. I go into training, I return home, and that is all I do.

"When it snowed I felt like it was minus 15, and feared I was going to turn into an ice cube."

"It is rare to see truly beautiful girls when you go out during the day.

"But it's a different story when you go out in the evening. The girls seem to cover themselves up all day, only to be in good-looking mode at night.

"In Madrid I had the impression that all the women were beautiful."

A Wigan spokesman said: "It was intended as a light-hearted interview. It says how happy and settled Mohamed is in England, and is very respectful of the club."

Wigan midfielder Mohamed Diame has expressed disbelief at the storm that has blown up around comments he made about the town in the French media.

The 23-year-old, who joined the Latics from Rayo Vallecano in August 2009, was quoted on French website So Foot calling Wigan cold and boring.

He stood up for the town's women when asked whether it was true the English are ugly but complained that, in contrast to his previous home city of Madrid, the women are only beautiful at night.

Diame, though, insists his comments have been misinterpreted and expressed total surprise about the fuss they have caused.

He told www.wiganlatics.co.uk: "I cannot believe what's happened. I don't really think there's anything to apologise for because I never said the things I'm meant to have done, and the way it's been reported is just a joke.

"The only people I want to apologise to are the chairman and the club for having to waste their time dealing with something that is just so completely silly.

"I had a conversation with the journalist in which we talked informally about football issues and how settled I was in England and how Wigan was different from Madrid, where I used to play for Rayo Vallecano.

"Of course they're different, one's a capital city in a hot climate, the other's a small town where we had temperatures of -10C a few weeks ago. What am I meant to say?

"The question they asked me was whether people in England were ugly, which was a bad question so I just said the girls cover themselves up more in England because it's colder. It was just banter.

"I hope the Wigan fans will take this in the spirit it was meant because I have complete respect for the club, the chairman, the manager and our supporters. I really like the town and the people here have always been so welcoming and friendly."

Wigan Athletic chairman Dave Whelan has revealed his club are interested in signing Manchester City and England winger Shaun Wright-Phillips this summer.

Whelan is hoping that the lure of playing under manager Roberto Martinez will work in his club’s favour as the Latics aim to strengthen their squad as they set their sights on securing a place in the top half of the Premier League following last season’s relegation skirmish.

Wigan would be asked to pay £3 million for the former Chelsea player but Whelan has acknowledged that Wright-Phillips’ wage demands could prove a stumbling block with the DW Stadium club unable to match the £60,000-per-week he currently receives at Eastlands.

Bolton are also understood to be keen on signing Wright-Phillips, who has been deemed surplus to requirements by City manager Roberto Mancini, but he is keen to continue plying his trade in the North West of England - a factor which could work in Wigan’s favour.

The Oman stopper enjoyed an excellent year on loan at the DW Stadium last term but Latics manager Roberto Martinez had taken his time trying to sort out a permanent move.

However, it is understood a transfer - said to be for a fee in the region of £4million - is likely to be concluded within the next 24 hours.

It will represent a good move for all parties, given Al Habsi had little chance of ousting Jussi Jaaskelainen at the Reebok Stadium.

"We could easily have kept him but I have to be fair to Ali," said manager Owen Coyle.

"It is good business. If that is concluded, we will wish him well.

"He did well at Wigan last year and they have tried to secure his services."

There's a few City players going to have to slash their demands for equivalent wages elsewhere if they want to salvage their careers and play first team football. Suppose it depends what is most important to them... because if it's money then they are better off in City's reserves anyway.

Wigan Athletic chairman Dave Whelan has said that his club must sell midfielder Charles N’Zogbia, despite what manager Roberto Martinez has said previously.

Martinez said that Wigan would not sell their star players before the start of the Premier League season, but now Whelan has stated a completely different view.

Whelan told talkSPORT: "We have to sell Charles N'Zogbia because he's on the last year of his contract.

"We can't keep him if a big club comes for him and he does deserve a big club because he's that kind of quality player."

This is the complete reverse of what manager Roberto Martinez said on Friday at the announcement of a new shirt sponsorship deal, but Whelan seems adamant that it will be incredibly difficult to keep hold of French international N’Zogbia and reported Arsenal target Hugo Rodallega.

Liverpool are watching James McCarthy’s contract talks at Wigan with a keen interest.

And the Reds are ready to pounce if they sense the Latics are prepared to cash in on the Ireland international rather than risk losing him at a reduced fee.

There is a long-term Anfield interest in the Glasgow-born youngster, who they tried to sign him from his first club, Hamilton, in 2009.

McCarthy opted for the regular-first team opportunities Wigan were offering but now, at the age of 20, he feels he is approaching the time when he should move on.

Liverpool were content to maintain a mere watching brief on the midfielder, then make a more concrete move in future seasons.

But McCarthy has been in talks with Wigan for more than a month over a new contract, after being promised an improvement on the deal he agreed when he joined the club.

So far, no progress has been made in those discussions, and that has left the Latics thinking about cashing in on a player they value at £15million.
