This is pretty much impossible to do especially considering best anf favourite would probably give different answers. I would go for:
The Empire Strikes Back
Pulp Fiction
Memento
2001: A Space Odyssey
Battle Royale

But this list is far from concrete. Also, if you haven't watch Star Wars watch in the order IV, V, VI, I, II, III otherwise I and II will probably put you off as they are awful and I think the series works better in release order as I, II, III are sort of Vader's excuse for what happened in IV, V, VI.

I think we should do an AGR Walk of Fame for movies, voting for our favs from each genre.

Westworld! Love that film! One of those films that whenever it is on tv I HAVE to watch it.

The Empire Strikes Back: best star wars flick - everything about it is great!

Tremors: this is jsut pure fun & laughs - every time I see it I laugh. A modern classic!

Legend: I'm a SF&F fan and this one, though not brilliant wrt storyline has one of the msot incredible sets ever filmed by one Ridley Scott

Lock, Stock & 2 Smoking Barrels: it cam ebefore Snatch and I sitll like it better than the 2nd film. Guy Ritchie's best.

Predator: good old fashioned adrenalin kickass-ing!

:D i like my intellectual films too so a few mentions - but i cant watch them 4-5 times a month like above

Shawshank redemption
The Usual Suspects
LOTR trilogy

I've decided to set myself a target of watching the top 10 films mentioned in member's lists overall in this thread. :)

So far the top 10, bar the ones i've already seen, are;

Quote:
1. Star Wars's - 4
(SBH & T&B & MMFY & Fozzibear)

2. Shawshank Redemption - 3
(Moyes & PMDK & Riq)

3. Inception - 3
(IDFD & Moyes & Riq)

4. Apocalypse Now - 2
(O-Dog & Moyes)

5. Gladiator - 2
(PMDK & Spawny)

6. Memento - 2
(T&B & Riq)

7. Platoon - 2
(Serb & Moyes)

8. Taxi Driver - 2
(SBH & Moyes)

9. Terminator 2 - 2
(Moyes & Kie)

10.

I've only taken into account members' top 5's excluding Moyes' who i used all 20 of his nominations.

All other films have one each, so i'll leave it a bit too see if anyone else posts for the tenth spot, if not then i'll pick one at random.

I've included all the Star Wars films 'cus i wanna see them anyway, plus i guess i'll have to watch the 1st Terminator before the 2nd.

Bit too late now, but Terminator 1 was on BBC3 tonight.

Another film I'd like to add to the list is The Butterfly Effect, which narrowly missed out on my top five. Amazing horror/ sci-fi/ psychological thriller film if you're into that kinda thing.

SoV watch American History X if you've never seen it before. You won't regret it.

I've heard some good things about this film before. I'll probably have it as the tenth film to watch, i will get round to watching them one day. Otherwise, I'll make a note of watching it anyway.
