This is a problem with the Ireland tactics if you conceed early it's very hard to then start chasing the game because you have to score.

Ireland actually did well to get back into the game but that howler from Ward probably knocked the wind out of them a bit then once Croatia got a 2 goal lead they knew they could sit back a bit and counter.

The thing is, we're arguably the worst team in the tournament, we try to be defensibly sound yet we're set up 4-4-2? Surely 5 across the middle with big Jon Walters up top is our best option?

Plus, I'm not having Simon Cox for McGeady.

Robbie Keane is a bit of a problem he's not in form and he's probably not suited to that lone striker role but he is an absolute goal machine. He needs a runner with him to help him out.

You could make an argument for going 4-5-1 with Doyle or Walters up top for the first 70 minutes then bring on Keane to sniff out a winner.

Like I said the problem with being a defensive side is what happens when you get the freak goal in the first 10 minutes it's very hard to change it as it's to early to make a sub and you're defensive players are much more comfortable sitting deep than being high up the pitch.

That's the problem JSP. We're a supposed defensive team that left ourselves totally exposed last night. :(

I fear the same will happen to England tonight if we conceed early realistically we can't go to plan B until the 60th minute when you can start to make subs.

I sort of get why Ireland do it's playing to their strengths they don't really have much of a goal threat even if they picked there more attacking players so keeping the score down at their end gives them the best chance of winning.

I guess in qualifying individual errors like the freak incident on the Jelavic goal just didn't happen.

Tbh, we rode our luck at times in qualifying. Plus the fact we got Estonia ini the play-offs. It ran out last night. For me, against Spain I'd like to see:

-------------Given

O'Shea--Dunne--St. Ledger--Ward

--------Andrews-Whelan

-------------Gibson

Duff-------------------------McClean

-------------Walters

Sean St Ledger strikes me as the kind of man who will not know what hit him when Spain line up with no strikers and he'll fall into the trap of getting sucked forward and leaving a huge gap for a player to dart into behind him.

Not sure on what your options are but I think Italy's 3 at the back system worked well vs Spain in terms of limiting the threat as when one man went forward there was someone spare marking the space they got a lot of late blocks in on Spanish shots.

You definitely want people who can run the ball 40 or 50 yards to get players up the pitch because it at least forces Spanish players to track back if you just lump it out chances are the ball will be heading back towards you before they've even started to retreat. Kalou was brilliant at doing this for Chelsea he had f*ck all end product at the end of the runs but he was a real outlet McClean potentially could do this for you guys.

In footage captured on the tram on the way to Poznan’s Municipal Stadium, here we see a rabble of Irish fans attempting and largely succeeding to drown out the chants of their Croatian counterparts with a hearty rendition of a haunting Celtic folk ballad – the ‘Home and Away’ theme tune.

Y’know, just because…

choooooooon!!!!

Republic of Ireland have a fully-fit squad ahead of their vital game with Spain, after Richard Dunne and Darron Gibson returned to action.

The Irish must avoid defeat to the defending champions to avoid elimination from the tournament before their final group game against Italy on Monday.

Dunne, who sat out Monday's session with blistered feet, was able to take a full part on Tuesday, as Giovanni Trapattoni finalises his plans to take on the world champions in Gdansk.

Meanwhile, Darron Gibson also joined the squad in their preparations at the Municipal stadium after the results of a scan on his troublesome thigh muscle were described as 'encouraging'.

Trapattoni's men will be determined to put on a show, after the disappointing display on Sunday when they lost 3-1 to Croatia in Poznan.

Giovanni Trapattoni has defended his decision to leave James McClean sitting on the bench as the Republic of Ireland were beaten by Croatia.

The Italian opted to replace left-winger Aiden McGeady eight minutes into the second half of Sunday night's 3-1 reverse in Poznan.

But rather than turning to specialist McClean, who won rave reviews for his performances with Sunderland in the Premier League during the second half of last season, he asked striker Simon Cox to line up in the Spartak Moscow man's place.

Trapattoni had anticipated the question and was ready for it when it arrived at the Republic's Gdynia training base this evening.

He said: "I was waiting for this question. Remember when you asked me why five strikers? I said Cox is also a winger and he can also play in a three as an attacking striker. Remember when you said this?

"Cox is one of the strikers but also at his club, can play right or left. He is also a striker in fact and in the past, has scored goals.

Paddy Power have put Ireland at 4/1 to score against Spain anytime.

If any of the Irish contingency are interested. Probably wont be up long.

A mauling you say? Nah I can't see us beating them by much more than 2 or 3 goals.
