England boss Roy Hodgson is expected to partner Andy Carroll with Danny Welbeck for their Euro 2012 clash with Sweden.

Reports suggest that Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain will be dropped to the bench to allow Carroll to come in to the side to exploit Sweden's aerial weakness.

Six of Sweden's last seven conceded goals have been headers and Hodgson will apparently turn to the Liverpool striker in an attempt to add to that statistic.

Ashley Young will return to his usual club position on the left wing and James Milner will remain on the right despite his disappointing game against France on Monday.

"I am not worried about our attacking play," said Hodgson, during a Thursday press conference which saw him repeatedly questioned about his attacking ambition.

"We have the quality of players and who can score and we have a world-class player of our own to bring back - and I know he is very anxious to get into the team."

I'd of picked Defoe ahead of Carroll with Carroll in the team it's just going to be the same cr*p we had for years with Crouch the defenders/midfielders will aim lazy long balls to the big man who'll win the headers but refs will call free kicks or he'll flick them on to nobody because everyone else is still 30 yards behind play working the way up the pitch.

Carroll is the desperate times for desperate measures option for the last 10 minutes when you absolutely have to score against a team who you've got penned in. Stick him down the middle and just get crosses into that penalty box because one thing I like about Carroll is he will drag 3 or 4 defenders with him in order to get on the end of the cross. If he gets a run at the ball then nothing is going to stop him.

Isakson looked very dodgy on shots from outside the area against Ukraine he fumbled a lot of them I'd be telling Defoe/Young/Welbeck/Gerrard to fire them in at him and make sure people follow them early in the game. The movement of Defoe & Welbeck will be a nightmare for the Swedish CB's as well I think they'd be much more comfortable trying to win the battle in the air with Carroll.

Hart

Johnson Terry Lescott Cole

Milner Gerrard Parker Young

Welbeck Defoe

Except he's just scored. Get in! Nice header too.

Fair play to Theo, done very well here. Great wing play for the assist.

He played a great part, a talented young lad. First time he's really impressed me tbh.

Oh yeah and F**K Ibrahimovic getting in Hart's face after he conceded the goal. They deserved to be knocked out just to get that tw*t out of the competition.

I totally agree with that too, just unnecessary. Can't stand the bloke tbh, he's not the sulkiest bloke in football only because Tevez out did him! lol

Thought Carroll did well tonight too, held it well, won most things, played some nice passes even, couple of good efforts, cracking header.

Young was shocking, Milner the same, Gerrard knackered after about 60 again but great cross for the goal. Parker did what he does.

The defence was poor..Lescott is a dreadful footballer..craps himself when he's on the ball.

Hart was poor for the first goal too.

Wellbeck might be a genius though.

Not sure whether or not I'd want Rooney to come in up front, Carroll and Wellbeck worked well.

Rooney and DWelbz have a good understanding, I'd definitely have them over Carroll and DWelbz.

Despite the fact both of them just played together, played well..and scored??

F*ck good understandings...we had something bordering on a team tonight. Rooney ruled himself out, if things are desperate I would bring him in, but not until then.

id go with Carrol and Welbeck against Ukraine bring Rooney on for last 20-25 mins so he can get some game time and save him for the quarters

Good result today but still a lot of improvement to be had imo

Ah to hell with it.

----------- Hart -----------
-Johnson Terry Lescott Cole-
------ Gerrard Parker --------
Walcott - Rooney - Wellbeck
-------- Carroll ------------

I thought Young and Milner were particularly piss poor, and Gerrard second half. :wall:

The love I have for Wellbeck is unbounded :rose:

Johnson and Young were atrocious. Milner and Parker painfully average. Against better sides Parker will be eaten alive.

Against Ukraine, I'd like to try out:

Hart

Jones, Terry, Lescott, Cole

Walcott, Gerrard, Milner, Welbeck

Rooney, Carroll

A 4-4-2 with the option of switching to 4-3-3/ 4-5-1.

Milner can't do Parker's job...Parker did well enough I thought, he's just knackered after an hour which is unfortunate. Seriously can't see Milner doing better than him against better opposition.

If he's just sitting as a DMC then he's alright. But watching him try to get forward in a two-man midfield was painful. He's much better as part of a central midfield three where he can harry the opposition, intercept balls and allow the other two midfielders to attack. Otherwise he's a poor passer and doesn't do much besides run around like a headless chicken. If we had someone that could just retain possession Carrick then we would have had no need for him in the team. Having said that I think Milner is a better passer than him and if we keep possession then we won't need Parker to be doing all the dogwork.

All that said...the biggest fear I have is Lescott, he is just abysmal as a footballer..he's good in the air and throwing himself into a last ditch block, but jesus. Slow, uncoordinated, one footed, can't pass, can't even run sometimes, looks like a competition winner who won a day out with the England team. What was that pass back to Hart all about where it ended up going out for a corner?
