Group winners England, France and Germany had already booked their places in the semi-finals of Euro 96 when the Czech Republic and Portugal faced each other on this day at Villa Park with the fourth and final spot up for grabs.

The first half ended goal-less as Luis Figo and Co saw plenty of the ball but struggled to break down the Czech defence.

The tie was settled early in the second half when Czech winger Karel Poborsky cut inside and burst through the centre of the pitch.

He got lucky with a bounce off a Portuguese defender's leg and was soon rushing into the box with the ball at his feet as the defence tried to close him down.

Potugal keeper Vitor Baia came off his line and began to come towards Poborsky. As he did so the Czech star scooped the ball up and over his head and it dropped into the net as Baia was frantically scrambling back.

It was one of the finest goals of the tournament - and indeed of any tournament - and was enough to win the game.

Czech midfielder Radoslav Latal was sent off with two minutes to go but his team-mates hung on to secure their place in the next round.

Watch the goal at 44 seconds into this video:

The Czech's beat France on penalties in the semi and continued their run all the way to the final where they lost to Germany in extra time.
