The 23-year-old has agreed personal terms and joins on a five-year contract until 2017.

Man Utd boss Sir Alex Ferguson told the club's official website: "Alexander is one of the best young left backs in Europe and we're delighted to sign him.

"He's someone we've been watching for a while now. He gives us some really exciting options in that position."

Buttner was part of Holland's preliminary squad for this year's European Championship and has made 119 appearances for Eredivisie side Vitesse over the past four years.

He becomes the second Dutch player in a week to make the switch to Manchester United, following in the footsteps of striker Robin van Persie, move moved from Arsenal in time to feature in Monday night's season-opening 1-0 defeat at Everton.

"Joining Manchester United is one of the best days of my life," Buttner said.

"It's a team I have admired for many years now and I can't wait to join my team-mates and play my part in helping the club be successful."

The Dutchman completed his medical in Manchester on Monday and is understood to have moved on a deal worth £3.9 million.

Buttner, a product of the youth system at Vitesse, was linked with a move to Barclays Premier League newcomers Southampton earlier in the summer, but that deal fell through, paving the way for the switch to United.

Buttner will provide much-needed cover for first-choice left-back Patrice Evra.

No one knows if he can defend, but he looks like he sure can attack - the little of him on youtube shows a cannon of a left foot and some great penalties. That alone might be an upgrade on 2-goal Evra :p

Maybe Sir is going back to the old days of 'we'll score more than you'. Two attacking full-backs who can strike a ball and know how to score could be good news in terms of our attacking prowess.

Sounds like a good signing - should bring Patrice out of his comfort zone if nothing else.

Fingers crossed it'll give Pat a kick up the backside, and if not maybe we'll see Buttner playing before long.

While Manchester United boss Alex Ferguson hailed new signing Alexander Buttner as ‘one of the best young left-backs in Europe,’ the man who scouted the 23-year-old has confessed that he believed Buttner was only the third or fourth best left-back playing in Holland.

Buttner completed his transfer from Vitesse Arnhem to Manchester United yesterday and Ferguson was quick to praise the Dutchman after he signed a five-year contract at the club.

Ferguson said: "Alexander is one of the best young left backs in Europe and we're delighted to sign him. He's someone we've been watching for a while now. He gives us some really exciting options in that position."

However, Manchester United’s chief scout in the Netherlands, Ed van Stijn, has cast doubt on whether or not Buttner was Ferguson’s first choice and has said the youngster was not even the best left-back in the Eredivisie.

"Every season [United] ask all European scouts for a list of players," the Dutchman told Algemeen Dagblad.

"They ask you to create a top five of the best players in the league for every position. I had Buttner at number three or four on my list."

Ferguson had been looking for a new left-back this summer to compete with Patrice Evra though it was expected that Leighton Baines was United’s number one target. However, with Manchester United unwilling to pay Everton more than £12million, the deal never transpired.

At a cost of £3.9million, Buttner was a significantly cheaper option and at 23, the young defender could be a part of the Manchester United team for years to come. While Buttner may not have been Ferguson’s first choice, the veteran manager rarely buys a player if he is not convinced they are good enough for his team.

Surely that's him sacked? Casting doubt over a signing.

Probably misquoted, you can read it as one of the best in Holland or not the very best. But he did still make the shortlist, so he can't be too bad.

Also at 23 you wouldn't automatically expect him to be the best in Holland in his position anyway. Doesn't mean he's not good, or that he lacks the potential to be great.

ALEX BUTTNER has revealed he almost walked away from Manchester United after becoming homesick.

The Holland defender had a successful debut season at Old Trafford following his £4million move from Vitesse Arnhem last summer.

But left-back Buttner, 24, has struggled to settle in the upmarket Cheshire village of Alderley Edge.

He grew up on a travellers’ camp in Holland and missed his family setting so badly he considered going home.

Buttner said: “I now know about homesickness.

“I’d think about my family and friends at home many times.

“How they were, what they were doing, little things like that.

“But I did not give up and I have my girlfriend Laura and brother Denny to thank for that.

“They were always there for me in England. I could call on them any time. I needed their warmth.

“I’m a fighter. But had I been on my own, I’d have got on a plane back to Holland a long time ago.”

He's done alright in his first season, my concern is over his defensive play. Going forward he's pretty good, but would you rely on him at the back in the big games? Not for me.

He does play more like a wing back than a full back, and would probably suit a team that plays 3-5-2.
