WHEN Yossi Benayoun met Fabio Aurelio’s free-kick, his header was not just a hammer blow to the Champions League hopes of Real Madrid.

It was a thumping warning to everyone at the Emirates. Unless Juande Ramos can pull off a European miracle, the eyes of every Madridista will turn to Arsene Wenger.

Despite their resurgent league form, Real are unlikely to overhaul bitter rivals Barcelona and are now long odds against making it past Liverpool at Anfield in 10 days’ time.

And that will confirm Ramos’s exit at the end of the season. The pursuit of Wenger will then begin in earnest.

Election

Europe’s football grapevine is buzzing with the suggestion that Wenger WILL be in charge at the Bernabeu next season. Patty, The Investigative Newshound was the first to reveal Real’s fresh bid for Wenger’s services in December.

And since then, the manoeuvring behind the scenes has only reinforced that interest. Stand-in president Vicente Boluda — who stepped in when Ramon Calderon was forced to quit — has confirmed that, along with the current board, he will not see out the full term.

That means there will be an election in the summer. Normally, that election would take place in July, making it difficult to poach a top-class manager.

But the club could yet bring the voting forward and, if it becomes clear that only one candidate is planning to stand, it could be at the end of May.

Even though he has yet to come forward, former president Florentino Perez is expected to stand and will, if he is opposed, be overwhelming favourite.

Perez — architect of the galactico policy in his previous reign — will then present a star-studded manifesto to the Real Madrid members.

Perez remains close to some of the superstars he signed and would love to take Zinedine Zidane back to the Bernabeu.

Image
FLORENTINO PEREZ - architect

The dream scenario would be to have Wenger as both head coach and general manager while installing Zidane as the director of the youth academy, to be groomed by Wenger as his long-term successor.

Many observers think it was no coincidence that the leaking of the news that Perez could become Real president again coincided with Kaka’s rejection of that mind-bogglingly lucrative move to Manchester City.

And Real, of course, are repeatedly linked with Manchester United’s Cristiano Ronaldo. But to even begin to tempt Wenger — who has repeatedly reminded everyone that he has never broke a contract — the Frenchman would have to be given complete control of football matters at the club.

With Arsenal struggling to keep pace with the other Premier League big guns, Wenger might consider one last major challenge to finish his time in management.

Florentino Perez unsuccessfully instigated a huge overhaul of the playing staff in 2003 and Real Madrid look set to try the same plan in 2009. As many as 17 players could leave this summer.

Real Madrid are preparing for a mass clear-out in the summer, with no less than 17 players being considered to be shown the exit door as the club looks to regenerate its squad, Sport report.

Whoever wins the presidential race will told by the outgoing administration that drastic changes are required and Sport believe that moves are already planned to start the operation.

Five players are certainties to leave; Julien Faubert's loan will not be made permanent while Jerzy Dudek, Michel Salgado, Fabio Cannavaro and Javier Saviola will all go.

Salgado has reached the end of an era at the club while Cannavaro's desire to finish his career in Italy will see him go back to Serie A.

Among the more unexpected players to have their stays at the club put in doubt are Royston Drenthe, Daniel Parejo, Christoph Metzelder, Javi Garcia, Rafael van der Vaart and Ruben de la Red.

Drenthe is set to be loaned out and Metzelder will be told to look for another club. Meanwhile, Van der Vaart is thought to be low on confidence, having failed to break into the starting line-up, and is close to a departure, either via a loan or transfer.

The trio of youngsters are not considered to be at the level required, with current boss Juande Ramos having not been impressed with any of them enough to give them a chance in his side.

Four more surprising names then appear. Fernando Gago, Mahamadou Diarra, Guti and Gabriel Heinze are all likely to have their situations analysed as the club look to rebuild.

Gago has suffered in recent big games for the Blancos, while Diarra's long-term injury looks to have seen him replaced in the side by his namesake Lassana, Heinze continues to cast doubts about his temperament and Guti will have to show that he can still play at the highest level, according to the report.

The last quartet could yet win their place back at the club, but Perez allowed no less than 16 players to leave in 2003 after a successful run and, while that proved to be the beginning of his downfall, it seems as though repeating such an exodus has once more become an eminent possibility after Madrid's Champions League humiliation.

I dont know how they are allowed to get away with this kind of thing. can you imagine the noises that would be coming out of FIFA and UEFA towers if that was an English team?

Real Madrid are set to install a new coach in the summer and now another name has been added to their wish list...

Jose Mourinho could be set to be offered the job of resurrecting Real Madrid's fortunes next term if Florentino Perez wins the Spanish club's presidential elections in June, according to a report.

The Portuguese boss may have stated recently that he wants to remain at the San Siro, however, that will not stop los Merengues from making him an offer that he may find hard to refuse.

Perez is ready to announce that he will run to be president once again and is rumoured to be a shoe-in with the club's fans, who are desperate to see the creator of Galactico era back the helm.

Along with a host of star players being linked with a move to Madrid, the question of who will take over from Juande Ramos is high on the would-be supremo's agenda, AS state.

Carlo Ancelotti looks likely to either join Chelsea or stay with Milan, while the lack of control has meant that Arsene Wenger is not interested, despite a €9 million-a-year offer.

Mourinho has always been high on Perez's list and, after several meetings with his right-hand man, Jorge Valdano, the Inter coach's name is now at the top.

The pressure will be on Inter to give their trainer what he wants in the summer to avoid him deciding to try his hand in Spain.

Florentino Perez has promised a 'spectacular project' should he be elected as Real Madrid president.

Perez officially confirmed his desire to re-run for a post he held between 2000 and 2006 on Thursday.

During his first spell at the helm he helped Real lift two Primera Liga titles and conquer Europe in the UEFA Champions League.

He was also responsible for the famous 'Galaticos' transfer policy which saw the likes of Luis Figo, Zinedine Zidane, Ronaldo and David Beckham sign for Los Blancos.

Perez has hinted that his plans for the future revolve around similar principles, but has so far refrained from revealing the names of those he would wish to bring to Santiago Bernabeu upon his return to office.

"We are working towards and we will work to create a spectacular project, and that is to make Real Madrid the best club in the world once more," said Perez, who is considered the favourite to win the election.

"We want to clean the image of the club and become leaders in Europe.

"A club like Real Madrid needs to have several of the best players in the world and even though I can't discuss names today, we have a spectacular project on the sporting side."

Manchester United's World Player of the Year Cristiano Ronaldo and AC Milan's Brazilian superstar Kaka are just two of the names strongly linked with Real in recent times.
Motivation

Perez is known to be an admirer of both, but has refused to comment on speculation suggesting he is lining up big-money moves for either player.

"Cristiano Ronaldo is one of the best players in the world," he said.

He went on to add on the continued speculation regarding Kaka: "I'm an intimate friend of (Milan vice-president) Adriano Galliani and when we meet up we always have a good chat - and we also talk about football."

Should Perez win the election, his first task will be to overhaul the domestic dominance currently enjoyed by arch rivals Barcelona.

The Catalan giants are on course to land an historic Treble this season and Perez admits Pep Guardiola's side set the standard which Real must strive to achieve.

"Barcelona are having a magnificent season, but that is motivation for me because I want to make Madrid great again," he said.

"I want us to be the leader in Europe, to compete with teams like Barcelona, Manchester United and Chelsea.

"We have seen that Barcelona and Manchester United have played the best football in Europe this year - and that's the level we have to get to."

Real Madrid's current problems are a direct result of his Galactico policy as he spent all there cash on players who were at there peak paid them a fortune then watched them all leave for nothing. They should concentrate on building a team not individuals. Real are so far off the pace at the moment i'd even go as far as saying our reserve/carling cup side would hammer them.

Probably another large donation from the King or the Madrid council. They've probably paid off the Galactico's by now anyway as there revenue is massive added to the fact they own the Bernabeu they could probably mortgage that.

If I was them though i'd be hoovering up all the young Spanish players as they are the best in the world as the moment and it's no suprise Barca are doing so well this season because of it.

I think he'll be out of there in the summer so don't worry about Ruud.

I saw something the other day saying he wants to negotiate Ronaldo's price down from 80m Euro's to 60m Euro's. Considering since last summer he's won WPOTY i'd suggest they need to up the price.

Agreed. Madrid don't operate in the real world, they're like a kid cheating at football manager, every time the pot is empty they add another £100m to the kitty.

I'd say the pot is pretty full anyway not sure on exact figures but there turnover is up there's with ours and the profit all goes on players as they don't have to satisfy shareholders or in our case bank managers. They might actually have this money but i'd say they'll get a little help along the way especially if they want Kaka, Ronaldo and Ribery.

Unlucky for them in the fact that Man City will bid for everyone this summer driving up all the prices when we're meant to be in a recession.

Barcelona's players may not want to move to Real Madrid, but that will not stop Florentino Perez from trying to sign them should he take control at the Bernabeu...

Florentino Perez has hinted that he considers any player that he wants to be fair game and denied ever agreeing to shy away from buying players from Barcelona.

After announcing that he will stand in Real Madrid's presidential election in June, the construction giant has seen himself linked with a host of world class players.

While many names are from abroad, Perez was asked about a repeat performance of the Luis Figo transfer that saw him able to win office in 2000 from Lorenzo Sanz.

Lionel Messi, Andres Iniesta and Xavi have laughed off suggestions that they could be tempted to move to the Bernabeu, but Perez has revealed that he would see them as possibilities.

Joan Laporta and former Madrid president, Ramon Calderon, openly admitted that they had a gentleman's agreement not to try and attract each others players.

Perez though does not follow that mantra and believes that because Barcelona are currently the best side in la Primera then Madrid would consider looking at their squad members.

"I do not remember any non-aggression pact wit Barcelona," he is quoted as saying by AS.

"Barca are having a superb season. Each player, when you sign a contract, includes a clause that allows them to leave if a certain amount is paid. We can talk about it when the elections are decided."

Antonio Valencia's agent has confirmed Real Madrid have made a bid for the Wigan winger.

The Latics are resigned to losing the Ecuador international and Real and Manchester United are believed to be battling it out for his services.

Wigan boss Steve Bruce has openly admitted the 23-year-old will move on in the summer as the JJB Stadium outfit prepare to sell him to the highest bidder.

Real have held a long-term interest in Valencia and tried to sign him during the January transfer window, and they have now made the first moves to lure him to the Spanish capital this summer by tabling an offer.

United are also believed to have contacted Wigan to register their interest in the winger with Sir Alex Ferguson a big admirer of the Ecuador international.

Valencia's agent, Diego Herrera, has admitted Real have bid for Valencia and that the Latics are awaiting other offers before allowing the player to leave.

"I believe Wigan will sell Antonio for the right offer and they will decide that once they receive that," Herrera told skysports.com.

"Real Madrid made an offer last week, but nobody from Wigan has told me of an offer from Manchester United.

"There are a number of interested clubs and I will speak with Wigan about it this week.

"Once the season is over I expect offers to be made and I will sit down with Antonio and decide what offer is in his best interests."

What price a possible loan-deal of Nani for a season and Valencia coming to United?

I just have an inkling that SAF knows Nani needs games and education but relying on him to produce the goods for United might be risky.

Still think for the figure of £20m thats being thrown around is way OTT he's probably worth half that. There's definitely something there talent wise and I like the idea of being able to loan Nani out to Wigan to give him matches.
