Time To Get Excited About The Olympics

We love a good moan in Britain, whether it's about the price of milk or the bloody Olympics. However, Johnny's urging us all to cheer up and get behind Team GB...

John Nicholson - F365.com

It was a lovely sunny, warm afternoon yesterday. Mid 70s, clear azure sky and a white-gold sun.

I was standing looking out over the Broad (not that kinda broad, bubba) that we live beside. The boats bobbed gently on the silver blue water, a Marsh Harrier flew overhead, smooth and laconic in its movement like it was Dimitar Berbatov in raptor form. It was a perfect July afternoon.

Then from behind me I head a whiney voice,

"Oooh it's just too hot for me...I'm too hot...let's get out of the sun."

I turned to see a large fleshy object of indeterminate gender emitting a pink, vaguely radioactive glow whilst cramming an ice-cream into a cavernous gap in the wall of flesh that was, tradition suggested, actually a head.

There was more moaning about the burning 73 degree heat. You'd have thought they were in Death Valley in July not the Norfolk Broads. And you know what it's like, you try to not let such people harsh your buzz but they're hard to ignore. And even though there is an implicit irony in moaning about people who are always moaning about things, you end up less happy than you would have been.

It has to be said, the British do like a moan-up. For some of our countrymen and women complaining is a national sport. A French politician once said that the British would rather complain than act. In other words, we'll bitch and moan but won't do anything about it. That seems about right. There is a tingle of joy in failure and decrepitude.

If there's one thing guaranteed to get my goat - no actual goat is involved - it's people who would rather find the bad in things than the good, and it's a trait I fight against in my own make-up. This characteristic is doubtless derived from an upbringing around professionally miserable Yorkshire folk who were only happy when they had something to moan about. But I really don't like it because it makes life less brilliant.

The Olympics has brought out this rich seam of misery in the British people, so much so that I suspect nothing would give most people more joy than to see it go down in flames as a shambles. The joy in the media at the G4S nonsense was palpable. Here was proof that it is going to be a disaster and by God how people danced. A vox pop on the news found one bloke who said "of course it's a shambles, nothing works in Britain." He might be typical or an extreme, but the fact he was broadcast nationally hints at the audience there is for such a world view.

Oddly, when I lived in Laguna Beach, California, it was the exact opposite. People would routinely pretend life was much better and more successful and just damn wonderful than it was or could ever possibly be. While this may be just as psychologically messed up as pretending disaster is forever imminent, I found it made the social niceties of life much more pleasant.

A bit of positive thinking doesn't have to turn you into a Southern Californian happy-clappy weirdo who thinks wearing black clothing will attract 'dark energies' but we seem slow to embrace and enjoy things as a nation.

While there is general admiration for Bradley Wiggans' Herculean achievement, there is definitely a preference in the UK for the plucky loser above the single-minded, ruthlessly dedicated winner. I even heard someone saying it was "too easy" for him!

Perhaps this is why Olympic football is not being celebrated or looked forward to in the slightest in this country. The status of tournaments is entirely in the gift of the football community and is as metaphysical as the concept of money. If we say something is important and back that with our ticket money and TV viewing, then it becomes important. If we withhold our support it ceases to have any meaning.

We assign relative value to competitions. Currently this means the League Cup is at the bottom, then comes the FA Cup, the Premier League and then the Champions League. The Olympics is an also ran, a joke, not 'proper' even though it comes around every four years and even though some countries certainly do take it more seriously - as the strength of the Brazil squad reveals.

We could believe in it more but for some reason we choose not to, at least at the outset. But if we won the gold medal would we all be so unimpressed? Would success not actually make it more important to us as a nation? Are we simply being too cool for school about the Olympics? Are we indulging our national 'shrug and moan' mentality too much by not getting excited about it?

I want us to win and I'm looking forward to seeing how well we can do. Whatever the limitations or doubts about Olympic football, ignoring it or complaining about it does no-one any favours. Let's get into it, embrace it and support it. Have a good time all the time has always been my motto...and it applies to Olympic football in July as much as anything else.

The Olympics is doing my head in and it hasn't started yet. My day on Friday was ruined by the Olympics not once, not twice but THREE times.

That's a lot of ruining... what happened?

FTR I couldn't give a monkeys about the Olympics... sick or hearing about it, sick of it being all over TV, sick of it.

We're not very good at it anyway, so we're going to be rubbish on our home turf, then can't blame it on being in a foreign land!!

Also, TBH, I think that it's easier to enjoy it the further you are from the absolute chaos of it all.

Well beating Aus and Germany is always good, but personally I just can't get excited about the majority of sports involved.

The Olympics can f*ck off, so far as I'm concerned. A corporate scam and a delusion.

Still it's great to be British isn't it. Sitting outside Stratford on a train with no air con for an hour because the points have failed for the third time in a week, while Boris urges you to "do your bit", wave a flag, be proud of being British blah blah blah wiff waff wiff waff. F**king Aryan wet dream couldn't organise a fart in an envelope and any city that would elect him deserves for the whole thing to fail shambolically.

yeah but he is good on Have I got news for you :|

I can't stand the summer Olympics. I don't mind the winter ones so much. You just can't trust the results. Until they make all drugs legal in the games it will be a farce :buzzin:

 I love Jessica Ennis, she is amazing!

I'm in two minds about the games, on one hand it is pretty awesome to have them in London, the buzz around the city is pretty cool and combined with the weather everyone seems in a good mood which is nice. On the other hand I f**king hate tourists getting in my way and it's going to be ten times worse for a few weeks, but it's only temporary so

Has made Stratford really nice which is a miracle in itself.

Personally they're not for me either, don't think I've ever watched a single Olympic event since my Mum used to watch Steve Ovett and Seb Coe when I was a kid and I was stuck watching it with her. I just don't like the events, reminds me of PE day at school not some best of the best competition.

I might have given it a chance if it wasn't for the drugs, they make any records absolutely meaningless anyway. The short sprints were tolerable before all the drugs, 100-200m weren't bad but they should allow all substances imo, to level the playing field... or maybe hold two separate games, one for honest non-drug fuelled competitors and one for super speed bulked-up junkie athletes. It just doesn't work mixed.

Plus after paying for this, I don't want to hear anything about cut backs in London and the rest of the country... let's not forget that the Olympics bankrupt Montreal and we cannot afford this if the government are to be believed. And all the while we're cutting services, benefits for the vulnerable, etc. but still can find £9Bn+ for some running races? To rub it in, there's much needed brand-new housing for the athletes that's to be pulled down straight afterwards etc., so I wouldn't be surprised if there's riots down there next time they announce cuts while they're watching so much money being wasted in front of their eyes.

Oh yeah, come on Team GB. :snigger:
